Technology Today - September 2018 More For Around the Home...

By Robert Sanborn

LaCrosse Weather Years ago at CES I came across LaCrosse Technologies, makers of the coolest weather stations for the home around anywhere. For the next ten years, each morning, I could easily look at the station sitting on top of the bookcase to see what the weather will be like for that day and beyond. I realize that today, I can go get my phone, find the weather app that I use and get it that way but just a glance as I walk by was to me much more simple. They have upgraded their products in a lot of ways; one being how much easier it is to see what is going on from the old grey LCD screens. This 308-146 Wireless Atomic Color Weather Station with USB Charging is way beyond what I had and is only $69.95.

If you live in the midwest and have a basement in your home, one of the things you need to check is the level of Radon in the ground and how much is coming into the living space. This was what led me to the Airthings booth at CES. They were showing off the Wave device that mounts to a wall in your home to give you an instant reading of the radon level in your home. Match it to an app for your phone to get much more detail. Available for $199 but you should take a look at the website as they have much more in the way of air quality monitoring for the home. The peace of mind is well worth it.

Are you still using Microsoft Windows 7 ? If so, Microsoft again stated that Windows 7 will reach end of support on January 14, 2020. That means you won't even get the security patches and updates that is pretty much all you see now with it. Windows 10 is stable enough but if you have a machine that is more than 3 years old, I would be hesitant to upgrade it. Yes, Windows 10 comes with a lot of built in drivers for hardware and from what I have seen with the computers I build with the Asus mainboard, you hardly need at all to load any of the manufacturer drivers to get things to work.

If you have done absolutely nothing with Bitcoins and the world of Crypto Currency; you are smart. The South Koreans are going banannas over them with many companies issueing their own currency. There is a terrific article over at the Korean IT News Desk. People will speculate on anything.

"FCoin is a well-known cryptocurrency exchange that has made significant progress in a short period of time through trading mining. In just two months since its establishment in May, it has surpassed large global exchanges and it is placed as the number one exchange based on volume. Its average daily volume is about $3.56 billion (4 trillion KRW) according to CoinMarketCap"

Hypercel

Over the years I have picked up some pretty neat and very useful gadgets from Hypercel Marketing. Just heard about this and can't wait to get my hands on one.

"Want fast charging power on the road? Engineered with a specialized Power Delivery chipset and the most advanced charging technology, the new PD car charger from HyperGear offers up to 27 watts of high voltage charging power to a wide range of compatible devices from smartphones to laptops. With over 5X the power of standard chargers, this one charger works with even the most power-hungry devices like the 12” MacBook. You can even fast charge the iPhone X, 8/8 Plus and the new Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes! This is the next level of high-speed charging."

I have to admit, this is one of my favorite companies. Catalyst has been making waterproof cases for several years and when I had my iPhones, it protected all of them to the point that I would walk out into the middle of a lake and take pictures of boats and people. They continue to do the wonderful cases and have now come out with a waterproof backpack that folds small enough to fit into a cargo pocket on your shorts. It is the Catalyst Waterproof 20L Backpack unveiled at IFA in Berlin.

Waterproof, dustproof, a slim design, ultralight, and includes a wireless charger inside as well. The side pockets are 9 inches deep and has taped waterproof seams. Very cool looking and so practical when you are out in places like this. Available for around $120.
